The Wellington - Welwyn
The Wellington has always had its origins as the local inn in this historic roman village since the early 13 hundreds. In the 17th and 18th centuries as a coaching inn it became an important stopping off point for weary travellers heading up the Great North Road; the famous writer Samuel Pepys is said to have stayed here and remarked that "he had had his worst nights sleep ever!" Today The Wellington still sells home cooked food and wine to the discerning locals though the setting has undergone a sympathetic and romantic refurbishment, becoming a candle lit focal point of village drinking and dining opposite the church. |
